Sustainable Singapore Gallery’s e-School Programme

Can't visit the Sustainable Singapore Gallery (SSG) physically for a learning journey? You're not alone - many schools are unable to conduct outdoors or out-of-school learning programmes as well.

But this doesn't mean that sustainability learning should stop! Hence, the SSG team is excited to announce the launch of SSG’s e-School Programme – and it's FREE for all schools and learning centres in Singapore!

The e-School Programme encourages active and interactive learning about sustainability for all students via digital platforms; which can be experienced right inside the classroom! The programme highlights key points from the rich information available in the gallery. This covers a range of topics, including climate change, energy efficiency, water conservation and waste minimisation.

The content is tailored to different learning levels, so learning is made easily digestible no matter what level the students are at. With activities such as trivia quizzes and a variety of upcycling workshops to choose from, schools can bring this fun and educational digital experience directly to students!

Register for the e-SSGSP via this link: http://tinyurl.com/essgsp. Remember to act fast - sessions are limited!

Can't go out? Join iBuildSG Club's very own series of Digital Learning Journeys

After the first digital learning journey to the BuildSG Gallery, the next location the iBuildSG Club team went to is the iconic photo spot of the south: the Henderson Waves bridge!

Almost 400 participants joined the second LIVE digital learning journey to Henderson Waves. From learning about the interesting materials used in its construction to the sustainability features the bridge had, the innovations and technology that was involved in building this iconic bridge offers many insights into Singapore's built environment. Viewers also had the chance to participate by commenting their answers to questions shared during the session!

Upcycling with Sembcorp – online family edition!

In July, team Terra conducted an online upcycling workshop for staff members from Sembcorp and their families. Through a live workshop session, participants learned about environmental sustainability and put them into practice in a hands-on way – through upcycling!

By transforming plastic waste into a functional pouch during the session, participants could see that resources and materials can be used in more than one way. The participants also found that the pouch-making was easy, engaging and educational – proof that anyone can practice sustainability right at home!

Besides leaving with a upcycled plastic pouch perfect for organising and storing your notes, cards, and other loose items, the Sembcorp staff had an excellent time crafting with their family.

We are Digital! Check it out.

In this new normal, with social distancing and other measures in place, it has become difficult to conduct physical events. But this does not mean that impactful engagements are not possible!

Here at Terra SG, we believe that sustainability education should never stop. We are excited to introduce our online sustainability events, where you can engage your audience meaningfully in many ways!

Let’s continue to share about sustainability, wherever we are.

Be cruelty free

The beauty industry has an ugly secret. Every year, this billion-dollar industry test on approximately 100,000 to 200,000 animals around the world. The test subjects include rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice that are subjected to a confined life full of suffering and isolation. Research shows that only about 3% of these animals survive, while the others die in cages, alone and in pain.

Animal testing involves scientific testing and experimentation, during which animals are used to test a wide variety of chemicals and products. The purpose is to identify potential side effects the products might have on humans.

The sad truth is that animal testing is not a necessary process - cosmetics companies can still produce new, safe and exciting beauty products without inflicting pain on innocent animals. There are thousands of ingredients with a long history of safe use. If new chemical compounds are to be used, alternative means of testing are available. Here are some of them:

In Vitro Testing
Test methods and models based on human cell and tissue cultures can be used to test products. For example, Singapore scientists have created in-vitro human skin which has the same chemical and biological properties as human skin. The skin can be used to test the toxicity or irritability of a product, and the process can even be accelerated.

Computer Modelling
Researchers have developed sophisticated computer models that simulate human biology and the progression of developing diseases. These models can accurately predict the ways that new drugs will react in the human body, thus reducing the need for animal testing.

Human-Patient Simulators
Human-Patient simulators are computerised simulators that are lifelike, with the ability to breathe, bleed, talk, and even “die”. They can mimic illnesses and injuries and give the appropriate biological response injections, and can be used to test out new cosmetic products.

As consumers, it’s extremely important to know who you’re buying from and whether the companies you support are testing their products on animals. When possible, buy from companies that say no to animal testing. If the information is not available online, you can try contacting the companies to find out more.

Let’s be cruelty free.
