Welcome to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery!

Located on the second floor of the Marina Barrage, the Sustainable Singapore Gallery is a modern and interactive gallery that provides an overview of Singapore’s sustainable development. This 1,618 square-metre gallery is organised into six zones, labelled Zone A to Zone F, each providing information about a different aspect of sustainability in Singapore.
Walk Through the Gallery with us!
Zone A: Red Dot
Begin your gallery journey in Red Dot (Zone A), a zone that explains climate change and its impacts on a small but densely populated Singapore.
With interactive screens as your guide, you can dive deep into information about climate change, the greenhouse effect, rising sea levels and carbon emissions. Then, head to a grand interactive exhibit that breaks down Singapore’s Climate Action Plan – measures that will be implemented in Singapore to combat climate change – into bite-sized bits of information.
Before you venture on, attempt a short quiz to find out how much carbon footprint you are generating in your everyday. Once done, step into the Climate Chamber, a multi-screen video display that poses to you the all-important question: will you take action for the climate?
Zone B: From The First Drop
As you enter From The First Drop (Zone B), you will hear the familiar sound of dripping water. In Singapore, clean water is easily available from any running tap. But water is a very precious resource on our small island. This zone tells the Singapore water story and the steps we took to make our water supply resilient.
Explore the interactive multi-touch screen in this zone to find out more about our Four National Taps, the sources which we use to obtain fresh and clean water for everyone.
Then, open your eyes to how used water travels underground from your home with a life-sized replica of the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System, the “superhighway” for our used water. You’ll get a glimpse of our past sewerage system too. A replica of the Night Soil Bucket, Singapore’s old, rote sewerage system from the 1980s, sits perched at the corner as a reminder of how far we have come.
Finally, a wall mural filled with water-saving tips will make a splash upon your mind. Each tip speaks specifically to a different situation. Whether you are a school student using water at home or the owner of a production line, you’re certain to bring home a tip that would ensure you save water.
Zone C: A First World Oasis
As you step into A First World Oasis (Zone C), it feels almost like you’re back in the heartlands. Singapore is well-known as a garden city and it is for good reason. Beautiful shrubs, plants, trees and grass fill our home city, making each space green and welcoming. This Zone illustrates the stories of how we built our cities on the backbone of nature, with green and blue spaces forming the landscape of our city.
Open your eyes to a nature-filled Singapore with a bird’s eye view of our island, and the natural parks and waterways that run through it. You’re certain to find greenery wherever you look.
Next, stand in front of a large interactive touchscreen, where striking animated graphics depict the features of the Active, Beautiful, Clean (ABC) Waters Programme, a programme that transforms our reservoirs, lakes and parks into spaces for all to enjoy. Touch the screen and you can even grow your own special plant, right beside the virtual lake.
Do you know the trees and flowers on our island? Slide the two rotoscopes in this zone to reveal interesting facts about five native species of trees and five native species of flowers, some of which you will certainly recognise.
Before you leave the greenery etched in your memory, take a moment to learn more about the heroes behind the clean, green and sustainable city of today. An Eco Champions showcase highlights the effort of these secret superheroes.
Zone D: City of the Future
The busy city of Singapore is always ready for the future. The City of the Future (Zone D) is supercharged with information on how we power our way into being a smart, vibrant and sustainable city for the world.
From solar panels to smart technologies, Singapore never lags behind in energy efficiency. Experience a wall panel with activated fans and feel the wind blow. Then, take a virtual tour of a home powered by smart appliances with the help of a sliding wall exhibit. You can find out more about all the capabilities of smart appliances with the tap of a button.
Then, it’s time for spin class. Hop on the stationary bikes and you’ll be cycling through a Singapore filled with information about our car-lite roads and how you can reduce your daily carbon emission by simply choosing different modes of transport.
Before you ride off into the cityscape, stop by an augmented reality exhibit where you’ll learn that there’s more to Singapore’s buildings than meets the eye. Look through the tablets and you’ll learn the many features of Singapore’s green and sustainable buildings and the possibilities for an even greener future.
Zone E: The Journey to Zero
Are we throwing away too much? And what happens to all the waste we dispose of? The Journey to Zero (Zone E) tells the story of Singapore’s efforts towards being a Zero Waste Nation and how we manage the exorbitant amount of waste we generate.
In the centre of the zone, marvel at the 3m tall sculpture made completely out of waste materials contributed by the pupils of River Valley Primary School. The sculpture displays a variety of everyday waste that students may see, ranging from toys to plastic bottles to kitchenware. Hidden among the materials are little nuggets of information – fun facts about recyclables and good recycling habits – for everyone to bring home.
Stop by the various interactive mini-games throughout the zone to discover the many important bits of information about our waste – which types of waste can or cannot be recycled, how to limit our food waste and where our waste ends up.
Finally, take a moment to stand above the floor display of Semakau Landfill, the place where all of Singapore’s general waste eventually end up. You will also see how much the island has already been filled with incinerated trash, so much so that it will run out of space by 2035.
Zone F: Future Tense
What will you do for a Sustainable Singapore? Future Tense (Zone F) provides you with a challenge: to commit yourself to help Singapore become more sustainable using everything you have learnt in the previous zones, and to be a part of the Sustainable Singapore Movement.
The first thing that will catch your eye at this final destination is a large wall mural that summarises the sustainability goals that Singapore aims to achieve by 2030. It serves as a final reminder that we need to work together to achieve a Sustainable Singapore.
Then, find yourself submerged in bubbles filled with everyone’s pledges for sustainability. To submit your own, type it into the touchscreen and watch your pledge float into a sea of hope.
Alternatively, pose for a photo in a trick-eye style exhibit featuring the Singapore skyline and tell your friends about this great learning experience online.
As you leave the Gallery and enjoy the view of Marina Barrage, we hope that you will apply all the lessons from the Gallery in your daily life and contribute to a sustainable Singapore.
Complimentary gallery tours for the public are available to all visitors.

SPECIAL EVENTS
All year round, the Sustainable Singapore Gallery hosts sustainability events that are free for the public to enjoy.
From an escape room event, to community-based sustainability markets, to a live viewing of the National Day Parade at the scenic Marina Barrage, the Sustainable Singapore Gallery has it all!
LITE-UP Sustainability Night
Held during the festive month of December, LITE-UP Sustainability Night was an event themed around the sustainability messages surrounding the light and energy that we use to power our city.
Droves of participants gathered for the exclusive upcycling workshop, where everyone had the chance to create their own bedside lamp using energy-saving LED lights and used plastic milk bottles.
But the main feature of the event was Singapore’s first eco-themed escape room experience, Night at the Gallery. Escape room participants had the opportunity to explore the Sustainable Singapore Gallery in a new light – complete darkness! Participants had the opportunity to role-play as time-travellers who traversed through an “abandoned” gallery in order to crack a special code and travel back in time to save the world.
LITE-UP was not only great fun for participants of all age groups, but also an amazing learning experience for everyone! Look out for future iterations of LITE-UP, coming soon!
National Day Parade 2019
The Marina Barrage is a wonderful space to spend National Day. Crowds often gather on the Green Roof, where the National Day Parade is screened, and fireworks are visible. In 2019, the Sustainable Singapore Gallery organised a special event on National Day to celebrate and educate Marina Barrage visitors of the importance of sustainability for our nation.
One key feature of this event was a Sustainability & Lifestyle Marketplace featuring over 30 local vendors selling and promoting sustainable products and food. Visitors had the opportunity to interact closely with the local sustainability community and even get involved by participating in an upcycling workshop session!
Guests also had the opportunity to embark on a Sustainable Adventure Trail, diving deep into the heart of environmental and social issues through experiential activities at different stations set up along the trail. The Gallery also offered complimentary tours for all visitors and screenings of short eco films to broaden the conversation surrounding sustainability.
Once the sun sets, then it’s showtime! Participants gather to watch the parade together and admire the beautiful fireworks, showing solidarity for Singapore and sustainability.
Eco Poetry Night
How can sustainability and the literary arts come together? The Sustainable Singapore Gallery worked with the host of local poetry open mic Spoke & Bird, Stephanie Dogfoot, to transform the Gallery into an inviting space for poets and writers to share their sustainability-related writing.
One memorable poem of the night humorously tackled the issue of the usage of plastic bags with a poem written the perspective of a one, highlighting the comical situations behind its daily use, such as “existing to only carry a can of chickpeas” and its ridiculously long lifespan. While the audience let out hearty laughs, the topic also visibly resonated with them.
The night ended with a special feature by local poet and eco-activist Venezia May and her take on the problems surrounding water scarcity and floods during her travels to foreign countries.
This quaint night event brought together a new community of people to share their perspectives about sustainability amidst the memorable backdrop of the Sustainable Singapore Gallery.
Our Events Calendar
School programmes
To complement sustainability learning in our school curriculum, the Sustainable Singapore Gallery offers a complimentary school programme for all educational institutions in Singapore, including MOE schools, institutions of higher learning, international schools and learning centres. The programme is designed for all students aged 5 and above, with different materials for their stages of learning:
Young Green (YG) – learners in Kindergarten schools (aged 5 to 6) and students in Primary 1 and 2 (aged 7 to 8)
Big Green (BG) – learners in Primary 3 to 6 (aged 9 to 12)
Super Green (SG) – learners in Secondary School, Tertiary Institutions and Institutions of Higher Learning (13 and above)
Students are first introduced to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery through an informative guided tour around the Gallery. The Gallery’s docents will deliver a guided tour pitched at the appropriate level for the students.
Once completed, students will set off on their own journey around the Gallery as they search for answers to questions in a fill-in-the-blanks game card. This game card, presented in a colourful comic-book style, features four Singaporean characters on their quest for the eco-friendly habits needed to protect Singapore.
Students in the Big Green and Super Green programmes will also undergo an experiential hands-on activity that is centred around the topics of food waste and food security in Singapore. This is in line with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources’ theme of food security in the year 2020. Through a live demonstration of composting and interactive quizzes about food waste, students will be able to learn about the impact of food waste on Singapore, ways to minimise and manage avoidable and unavoidable food waste, and composting.
School programmes are free-of-charge for all educational institutions in Singapore.
Corporate Programmes
Besides school programmes, the Gallery also offers experiential learning journeys for corporations, government organisations, statutory boards and NGOs.
During this learning journey, members of the organisation will be able to experience a fully guided tour of the Sustainable Singapore Gallery, followed by an interactive learning experience through a fill-in-the-blanks game card.
Through this programme, team members will learn about:
the importance of sustainability to Singapore’s national development
the various actions individuals and organisations can take to become more sustainable
the goals that Singapore has put in place to combat climate change and ensure sustainability
the various policies that Singapore has implemented for sustainability goals
Rooms in Marina Barrage are also available for venue hire for other on-site corporate activities. Below are some of the activities that have been previously organised at Marina Barrage:
