Experiments & Demonstrations

Carbon is the building block of life. These hands-on experiments expand our understanding of carbon beyond everyday choices and show how it shapes our oceans, forests, and ecosystems.

CC5. When Oceans Lose Colour

Through pH indicator experiments and coral bleaching models, participants witness how CO₂ acidifies oceans and heat stress strips reefs of colour. The demonstration reveals the fragility of marine ecosystems and underscores the importance of reducing carbon emissions.

CC6. When Forests Hold Carbon

Participants explore tree cookies and DBH measuring tapes to uncover how trees record age, growth, and carbon storage. The demonstration highlights forests as vital carbon sinks and the urgent need to conserve them for biodiversity and climate stability.

CC7. ‘Sea’mphony

Participants explore the hidden soundscape of the ocean to uncover how marine life communicates beneath the waves. The activity reveals how noise pollution disrupts animals that rely on sound to find food, navigate, and survive, highlighting the importance of protecting the ocean’s natural soundscape.

CC8. eDNA: Piecing Together the Silent Pond Story

Participants investigate a real-world environmental mystery by examining evidence from a once-thriving pond. The activity reveals how rising temperatures, habitat loss, and shifting rainfall patterns reshape ecosystems over time, highlighting the importance of protecting biodiversity and building resilience in a changing climate.
