Upcycling Online with PA PAssion WaVe

In May, Team Terra conducted an upcycling workshop for 20 participants together with People's Association PAssion WaVe... online! Though we were separated by screens, the live session was fun, engaging and highly educational!

Apart from learning about environmental sustainability, participants also tried their hands on upcycling. With six simple materials and tools, we shared how with them how they could transform disused milk or juice cartons into adorable pouches, perfect for storing small items such as loose change or even thumb drives!

Smiling with their completed products, these participants proved that being sustainable and upcycling is easy, fun, and can be completed right in the comfort of their homes!

Upcycling@Home is back for Season 2!

Terra has recently launched the second season of our Upcycling@Home video series! Our first season was a tremendous success with over 11,000 views from all over the world!

The Upcycling@Home video series is a collaboration between Terra SG and CP-Meiji to bring hands-on sustainability education to students and families at home. Using common upcycling techniques, everyone can learn to transform their household waste into functional items in a fun and easy manner!

In the first video of Season 2, learn how to create an upcycled Paper Carton Card Holder using just 7 materials and tools you can find lying around the house.

If you missed out or would like to try out our upcycling projects from Season 1, click on these links below:

We are going Digital!

In this new normal, with social distancing and other measures in place, it has become difficult to conduct physical events. But this does not mean that impactful engagements are not possible!

Here at Terra SG, we believe that sustainability education should never stop. We are excited to introduce our online sustainability events, where you can engage your audience meaningfully in many ways!

Let’s continue to share about sustainability, wherever we are.

What happens after World Environment Day?

World Environment Day (WED) falls on June 5 every year. On this day, we recognize the need to protect mother nature and take action to combat the accelerating deterioration of our natural world.

The theme for this year is biodiversity - a call to action after witnessing massive bushfires and extinction of certain species. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic - caused by a zoonotic disease (pathogens that spread between animals and people) - proves that our health is inexplicably linked to the health of our planet. That is why each and every one of us needs to start taking action.

But how? Our IG post on the World Environment Day explained 3-steps that everyone can take to contribute to environmental sustainability - Learn, Share, and Act. If you have not seen it, click here to read it!

That said, protecting the environment extends way past World Environment Day. It needs to be a continuous daily effort by all to integrate sustainability into our day-to-day lifestyle. Read what are some actions you can do to help save our world here.

It is time to redefine our relationship with nature, and change the course of destruction. Only when the environment is at the heart of our decision-making can we save our planet.

Our ocean is dying - What can you do?

Just three days after World Environment Day, we commemorate World Oceans Day on June 8 - a day aimed at recognizing the importance of ocean conservation and sustainability.

Covering 70% of our planet, the ocean is an important ecosystem that provides us with oxygen, food, jobs, and leisure activities. The ocean is essential to our planet’s survival, and we should protect it as much as possible.

Unfortunately, we seem to be doing the exact opposite, by damaging nature with our activities. Pollution, unsustainable fishing and sea shipping are just a few examples that threaten our shared planet.

Unsustainable fishing methods are causing many marine species to go extinct, with 7.3 million marine animals killed as bycatch every year and discarded back into the ocean. Learn more about how industrialised fishing is affecting our planet by watching this video.

So what can we do to conserve the ocean? Here are a few ways you can contribute:
  1. Ditch single-use plastics - Marine life and birds often mistake pieces of plastic as food, and end up choking on such harmful materials. Say no to single-use plastics!
  2. Reduce your energy consumption - This can reduce the effects of climate change and reduce the oceans’ temperatures, which is better for marine life.
  3. Choose Sustainable Seafood - We are consuming fish stocks faster than they can reproduce. Many species are at the risk of becoming extinct as a result. Choose seafood that are sustainably-sourced!
  4. Support ocean conservation organizations - Show your support to organizations that are protecting our oceans by donating to their causes, or volunteer your time.
  5. Raise awareness - The more people that are educated about the issue, the more work can be done and the closer we will be to protecting the ocean!
The ocean has an extraordinary capacity to regenerate, but only when it is protected. Can we do our part?
