Did you know how much food waste we generate on a day-to-day basis? On average, each Singaporean wastes about two bowls of rice each day, amounting to over 744 million kilograms of food waste a year! That’s why we all need to… A Bite By The Rules.

A Bite By The Rules is a brand-new virtual event by the Sustainable Singapore Gallery that is filled to the brim with tantalising activities that will educate everyone on the food waste problem in Singapore and provide solutions we can all take to reduce the amount of food waste produced at home.

Get an exclusive chance to attend sharing sessions by various social enterprises and food donation organisations, enjoy online cooking demonstrations with different kinds of food, hands-on workshops, and even a virtual game show featuring some of your favourite influencers!

Come join us for a full day of delicious fun and learn about the causes, impacts, and solutions to food waste! Learn more about our individual programmes for this delectable event below!

Want to know more about how to grow your own organic food… at home? Urban Sproutz, a company that specialises in household urban farming, will share with you the benefits of growing your very own edible garden and bring you behind-the-scenes to see the process behind tending to your vegetables. From farm to fork, this sharing session is perfect for those who have green thumbs - or those who love munching on vegetables!

You will also be treated to an upcycling workshop conducted by the Sustainable Singapore Gallery where you can make your own self-watering planter out of PET bottles you can find at home - a fun hands-on activity that can be the perfect weekend family project! Are you ready to take the next step to becoming an urban farmer?

They will be sharing with us how donating excess food can help to reduce food waste, as well as the things to look out for before making charitable food donations to their organisations!

This session will be moderated by Jennifer from Just Dabao, a social impact start-up that tackles the food waste issue in Asia.

Food from the Heart

Food from the Heart is a charity founded to redistribute surplus bread in February 2003. Today, Food from the Heart is one of Singapore's foremost independent food charity with IPC status devoted to alleviating hunger through efficient distribution of food in a sustainable manner and making a significant impact in food waste reduction. With the support of donors, food industry partners and more than 10,000 volunteers, Food from the Heart made a difference to the lives of more than 53,700 people throughout Singapore by distributing S$6.35 million worth of food in 2020.

Food Bank

The Food Bank Singapore is an IPC registered charity that acquires donated food, much of which would otherwise be wasted, from farms, manufacturers, distributors, retail stores, consumers, and other sources. They make the donated food available to those in need through a network of 370 member beneficiary centres, serving over 300,000 individuals.

Willing Hearts

Willing Hearts was founded in 2003 with the mission of serving the underprivileged, the needy and the marginalized members of our society.

They deliver more than 10,000 free meals 7 days a week across Singapore. Beneficiaries include elderly (many living alone), chronically sick people, low-income families (many living in rental flats), broken families (divorced, crime, drug, gambling, alcohol issues). During this COVID-19 pandemic, they also serve some migrant workers, stranded students, homeless persons and persons whose incomes have been affected by the pandemic situation.

Jennifer from Just Dabao

Jennifer left her full time job at Bloomberg in the midst of Covid-19 and co-founded Just Dabao. Prior to that, Jennifer worked with successful startups in the e-commerce industry and a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-backed social enterprise startup in healthcare. Prior to her MBA, she worked with P&G.

Composting is a natural process in which organic materials are broken down and turned into compost, which can be used to improve soil quality and help plants grow. In this session, Food Citizen will be breaking down the benefits of composting and giving us a live demonstration of how to turn organic household waste into compost.

We can’t think of a more convenient way of reducing food waste whilst getting a valuable end-product!

Crust Group

Based on a belief in a more circular economy, CRUST Group is a food tech startup that valorises food waste & loss into beverages for food service and retail partners. Surplus ingredients like bread and fruit peels are reincarnated into unique products like their CRUST beers.

Treatsure

treatsure is Singapore’s first mobile reservation platform connecting hotel buffets and grocers with surplus food to consumers. Its mission is to get everyone to treat food as treasure! Launched in 2017, the app is well-known for its novel ‘buffet-in-a-box’ concept. It recently opened Singapore’s first online-to-offline surplus grocery concept store.

Carolin Barr from susGain

Carolin is a passionate and driven entrepreneur and sustainability advocate. In February 2020, Carolin founded susGain, a social enterprise that aims to close the intention-action gap and empower consumers, businesses and our community to kickstart their sustainability journey.

Prior to susGain, Carolin worked as Account & Project Manager in an HR consultancy firm.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the same goes for food! Did you know that up to 30% of perfectly edible and fresh produce is discarded because it is not “aesthetically pretty” enough for consumers? We’re wasting so much perfectly edible food!

In this demonstration, Uglyfood will show us how to cook with “ugly” food and guide us on how to differentiate between blemishes and signs of spoilt produce. Together, we’ll learn how we can make the best use of “ugly” food to reduce unnecessary food waste!

In 2019, Singapore generated around 744 million kg of food waste - equivalent to the weight of 62,000 double decker buses! If that was shocking to you, you will be even more surprised in this sharing session where Zerowaste Food Singapore “spills the beans” about the problem of food waste and its disastrous impacts on us and the environment around us.

Food waste sounds like a dirty issue, but it doesn’t have to be! Did you know that you can turn your food waste into a multipurpose liquid cleaner? In this session, Zerowaste Food Singapore will also be teaching us the science behind turning food waste into eco-enzymes, which can be used as cheap and environmentally friendly cleaning agents.

Cherish is a bubbly extrovert who joins Ryza on his culinary adventures, assisting him mostly by devouring his tasty creations. They're also 2/3 co-founders of Sayang's, a cakery that focuses on creating chocolate cakes using ethically-sourced ingredients.

Dorcas is an artist who uses art as a medium for social good. On her platform, @earthtodorcas, she frequently uses writing and illustration to raise awareness, share resources and call for action on the climate crisis. She is a champion for art as a medium for climate action, and believes it can enable the wider community to participate meaningfully in the climate movement. Her work has been featured on TODAY online, The Straits Times as well as MustShareNews.

Chu Yu (@consciouscookieee) is a rising Year 4 Global Studies and Geography student from NUS. She posts photos (mostly of vegan food) on her Instagram feeds @consciouscookieee (sweet) & @consciousmochiii (savoury), and occasionally updates her sustainability resource bank, consciouscookieinsg.wordpress.com

Through her studies and extracurricular pursuits, she is exploring how to enact more systemic changes to ameliorate the ongoing environmental emergency – especially in the fields of corporate sustainability, green finance and the plant-based space.

Audrey is a visual designer who advocates for sustainable living by communicating complex issues through bite-sized posts on Instagram @thisisaudsomee and @a.tiny.warrior. As a firm believer that top-down and ground-up efforts should work in tandem, she aims to inspire action and push for change on both levels with her content.
